Above: Birth certificate of Elizabeth Everard's first child, Elizabeth Mansfield. Although John Mansfield, Elizabeth's husband, was named as the baby's father, he had deserted his wife more than a year prior to the child's birth. Also, when the baby died in December of the same year, no father was named, suggesting that Elizabeth was illegitimate.

Above: The death certificate of Elizabeth Everard's second child, a tiny premature son whom she named Francis Mansfield. Born weighing just 2 and a half pounds, Francis lived for four days. His father was named as John Mansfield, but could not have been as John never returned to the family he had deserted.
